The Motorhome traces its origins back to 1910 with the introduction of the Touring Landau Model by Peace- Arrow Motor Car Company. The Touring Landau was an exceptional automobile designed to increase the comfort of campers. It provided enough storage compartments for camping equipment and a back seat that folded into a bed and a toilet.
From 1910 To 1920
By the 1920s, the RV popularity caught on across the US. It provided a whole new experience and freedom for the average American citizen. Many people even built their own trailers by converting their panel trucks and buses to be sued for camping. According to the Gainsville Sun RV, camping clubs were set up across the U.S. with the first club being Tin Can Tourists established in 1919.
From 1920 To 1950
Wally Byam developed the Airstream Trailer in 1929 for his personal use. He began taking the RVs to competitions in the 1940s. This encouraged their development. The technology developed by Wally Byam would be the foundation of the motorized RVs that became popular in the 1950s. The Motorized RVs, were, however, less popular than trailers since they were relatively expensive.
From 1951 To 1970
In 1958 Raymond Frank designed his first RV to take his family on a vacation to Florida. It was Raymond Frank who first gave RVs the
name ''MotorHomes".
Although the Motorised RVs gained recognition in the 1950s, the RV had a massive rise in popularity in 1967 when Winnebago began mass production of the motorhomes.
From 1971 To 2000
In the 1970s and 80s RV manufactures continued to advance and develop different models. For instance, the Dodge Travco, which was popular in the 1970s, could handle a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 6 tons. It also had a toilet that incinerated its own waste.
Popular family RVs were developed in the 1990s and 2,000s and RV ownership has been growing steadily. The Coachmen Leprechaun, for instance, was developed to create the comfort of home on wheels. It also has a long list of safety and convenient features for a real family experience.
From 2000 At Now...
In the Modern Day Era, more and more people are embracing the RV lifestyle. Large RVs have been developed to cater for all the comforts of home. RVs in the modern era can have features like ovens, microwaves, wiFi, garbage disposals and even satellite dishes.
